Grains & carbs
Can cats eat oatmeal?
Plain oats cooked in water are non-toxic. Sugary instant packets and milk are the problem.
Portion: 1–2 teaspoons, occasionally.
The short answer
A spoonful of plain oatmeal cooked in water is safe for cats, though they don't need it. Avoid flavoured instant oats with sugar, raisins (toxic), chocolate or sweeteners, and don't make it with cow's milk, which most adult cats can't digest.
Why the verdict
Oats are a digestible grain with fibre and some protein, and they're used in some commercial cat foods. Cats' limited need for carbohydrates means oatmeal is filler. Common add-ins are the real risk: raisins, chocolate, xylitol, sugar and dairy.
How to prepare it
- Plain rolled or steel-cut oats, cooked in water.
- No milk, sugar, honey, raisins or chocolate.
- Serve lukewarm, not hot.
Signs of trouble
- Diarrhoea (if made with milk)
- Gas or bloating
