Can cats eat coffee?
Caffeine is a methylxanthine that overstimulates a cat's heart and nervous system.
Portion: None.
The short answer
No. Coffee, grounds, beans, espresso and caffeine pills are all toxic to cats. Caffeine overstimulates the heart and nervous system, and cats are small enough that a few licks of strong coffee, or chewing grounds or a coffee bean, can cause symptoms. A curious lap of milky coffee is less concerning than grounds or pills, but call your vet for advice either way.
Why it’s dangerous
Caffeine, like theobromine in chocolate, is a methylxanthine. It blocks adenosine receptors and increases heart rate, blood pressure and nervous-system excitability. Cats clear methylxanthines slowly, so effects can last hours. Grounds, beans and pills are far more concentrated than brewed coffee.
How to keep your cat safe
- Never offer coffee or coffee drinks.
- Bin used grounds and pods securely.
- Keep caffeine pills, energy drinks and chocolate-covered beans out of reach.
Signs of trouble
- Restlessness, hyperactivity
- Vomiting
- Rapid heart rate, panting
- Tremors
- Seizures (severe cases)
Coffee & cats: FAQ
My cat licked my coffee. Is that an emergency?
A lick or two of brewed coffee usually causes mild or no signs, but call your vet for advice based on the drink and your cat's weight. Grounds, beans or pills are more urgent.
Is decaf coffee safe for cats?
It still contains a little caffeine and offers nothing a cat needs. Avoid it.
